DESCRIPTION Brown or blackish-brown above. Creamish-white to pinkish-white below. Length from 200mm to 450mm, depending on sub-species. Snout either bluntly rounded or angular when viewed from from above and in profile (also depending on species). Body is uniform in thickness along the length. Smooth, shiny scales. Eyes reduced to dark spots under clear scales. Tail ends in a short, conical spine. The different sub-species of Blind Snake can be found throughout most of Australia, except for Tasmania. They are a small, worm-like, burrowing snake which are rarely seen during the day. It can sometimes be seen moving above ground at night, especially during warmer weather or after rain. Blind Snake's are non venemous and harmless. When aroused a strong, unpleasant smell is emitted from well developed anal glands. Blind Snake's feed principally on ants and termites. |
