This
is our platypus pool - well not technically ours, but down the
bottom of our property in the neighbouring reserve. We like to
think of it as ours though, as other people rarely go down there
and to us, it is our "special place".
As
you can see by this photo Platypuses are difficult to spot. This
one is quite young, about 25cm long.
On
the morning these photo's were taken the Platypus gave us quite
a show. We had roughly 24 sightings over a 20 minute period.
As
we sat quitely he ducked and dived and played in the rushing water
from the water fall. A few times he rolled on his side and scatched
himself and warmed his back in the sun.
The
other Platypuses viewed in this pool are significantly larger,
around 50cm in length and are shyer, coming out to play at early
morning and late in the afternoon.
The
size of this little guy indicates that he is probably last seasons
young, as this seasons young wouldn't be emerging from the burrow
until about March.
